It’s been pointed out that in posting pictures of myself and my four legged friend, River, paddling without our life jackets, I’m setting a bad example. In truth, we always have life jackets on board and wear them whenever I feel either of us are at risk. We are both strong swimmers, usually paddle close to shore and I am a very experienced, white water qualified, canoeist and feel justified in not always wearing a life jack. Real safety lies not in following rules but in making informed, rational decisions. Tthis is never more true then in a wilderness situation. That said, the unexpected can happen to any of us and I applaud those of you who choose to wear your PDFs at all times.
One thing you’ll never see on this site is me mixing alcohol with either boating or swimming. I’ve seen this end tragically too many times. Pleased people, wait until you’re safely on shore to enjoy yourselves.
