Quennell Lake is a one of my favorite South Island destinations. It’s a large lake (1.4 km² ) that, because of it’s varied shore line, feels like a small lake. It’s a wonderful place to paddle for an hour or a full afternoon.
Access to the lake is via the Quennell Lake car-top boat launch or, for a small fee, from the Zuiderzee Campsite. Unfortunately almost all of the land surrounding Quennell Lake is privately owned so there’s no place to pull out for a picnic or as swim without trespassing on private property.

Direction: From Hwy 1, just south of the airport, turn East onto Cedar Road (~3 km), then turn at the store/gas station onto Yellowpoint Road (~13 km). Look for Ritten Rd on the left. If you see the sign for Zuiderzee Campsite you’ve gone to far. Follow Ritten Rd about 1 km. The boat launch is on the left had side of the road just where the road makes a sharp right hand turn.
